Ganga Pollution
This is the immersion of idols goddess Durga. Specially during the festive season of Autumn, when the worship is over, thousands of idols are immersed along with tons of religious accessories. These include clay, bamboo-frames, earthen-pots, ropes, clothes, nylon, colours, cosmetics, ash, thermocol and organic rubbish like flowers, garlands, fruits, sweet-meats, leaves, cow-dung, sereals, coconut-fibres, straw, jute etc. The condition of the river after immersion-process is over, draws pity. The components of these rubbish contain artificial dyes, terpin oil, poisonous chemicals of colours like sulphur, iron, zinc, copper-sulphate, manganese, carbon etc. The organic matters like fibres, starch, carbohydrates react with river water to release poisonous methane gas, carbon-di-oxide and rottens water. This spoilt water is used in homely purpuses at a lot of places. The conflict between port-authority and munucipal corporation to clean Ganges is hammering the nail in her coffin. Though recent attempts are made by cleaning proposals of crane, covered area of net and professional cleaners etc to solve the problem, the drive is impossible without self-help from alert citizens. Can we dream of a silt-free Ganges with Hilsa shining at Bagbazar and Gandhighat ? Forgetting the contaminated fade water, will we ever be able to see sun-light reflecting on the wet back of a Dolphin at Hoogly river ? Lets hope. Lets dream come true.
